Write by the Quays was a project to celebrate the opening of MediaCityUK.
The project ran from September 2011 – March 2012 and was run by the University of Salford and BBC Writersroom North.
During the project, students at the University of Salford were set a brief to write a ten minute play about or inspired by Salford.
The six winning plays were performed at a showcase at the BBC at MediaCityUK.
As part of the project, students received development help from BBC Writersroom North on their scripts, in the form of an initial workshop, a chance to pitch their ideas at the midpoint of the project, and a final workshop prior to handing in submissions.
Judges were Creative Director of New Writing at the BBC Kate Rowland, actress Shobna Gulati and Associate Director of the Bush Theatre Omar Elerian.
The six winning plays were directed by Elizabeth Newman, Associate Director at the Octagon Theatre Bolton and performed by professional actors Cassie Atkinson, Paul Ryan Carberry, Eve Steele and Simon Trinder, providing students with an opportunity to observe a director and actors at work and a credit for their work.
The Write by the Quays showcase took place in the new BBC buildings at MediaCityUK and was attended by over 100 students, providing access to the new MediaCityUK space.
The project was created and overseen by Jennifer Tuckett from the University of Salford in collaboration with Henry Swindell, New Writing Manager at BBC Writersroom North, and provided Salford students with the opportunity to engage with the BBC and the opening of MediaCityUK in Salford.
